Oops

The Colombian government so mishandled the laptops it just seized from paramilitaries that it is admitting there was a big chunk of time during which they don't even know who might have messed with them:

Por tanto, la investigación concluye hasta ahora que estos computadores en Itaguí no estuvieron bajo custodia de la Policía Judicial del Inpec entre las 4 de la mañana del martes 13 y las 8 de la mañana del miércoles 14 y que a ellos pudieron tener acceso irregular otras personas.

To put it mildly, this is not exactly the best way to establish confidence with regard to seized laptops, and will certainly spark more questions about the FARC's.

In my mind, it was always the chain of custody issue. In short, as soon as they came across the laptops, they should have immediately secured them and not examined them.

Now that the Government of Colombia has acknowledged that the laptops were not secured, it appears that the chain of custody has been broken.

I might add, that this is the sort of incompetence that should cost someone their job. In the US this is sort of thing that would have the laptops excluded as evidence.

This was a major screw-up. I agree with Randy; someone should be fired over this.

Sometime last week I linked over to the El Tiempo editorial on the AUC laptop loss. This goes to a wider problem within the whole Colombian penal system that needs to be corrected.

Even broader, it points to the continued protection of the paramilitaries, because you know they must have been deleting files like crazy.

Greg,

Exactly!

If this doesn't highlight cops/military sympathy with the paras, I don't know what does.

Let's see how Uribe y cia deal with this. Like Boz says, people should be fired and hauled up on charges for this; it remains to be seen as to whether Uribe will really do it. What a disgrace....

It also remains to be seen how high up this goes.

No doubt El Tiempo won't be raising questions about the FARC's, though.

Agree with Justin period

That doesn't sound much like slave revolt.
